When I was 12 years old, my family would go to the theater and watch a Hindi film every Friday night. It was an event that always had me enthralled and engrossed in the culture and lives of India. When we moved to America, we had no theater — we could barely speak English — but we tried everything possible to find "Bollywood." Growing up in America without many Indian friends made it hard to understand not only the music and dance, but also what people were saying on screen (Hindi is very different from English). It wasn't until I started studying at college that I had a chance to learn about Indian cinema in depth through film studies courses. And since then, I've had the privilege of seeing some very amazing films. One of my favorite films is "Peepli Live." The movie depicts several stories, intertwining the lives of three families living in the same town over 10 years. One night, an infertile woman is jilted by her lover on the night of her wedding (she was supposed to marry the man's brother). She discovers that she is barren; she has no children. Her family must struggle to provide for themselves after they lose their daughter, daughter-in-law and grandchild, leaving one member of each generation who can maintain their family's many businesses. The way the film depicts the lives of these three families is so intimate and feels so real, as if you were there witnessing their struggles and triumphs. Watching it always makes me want to start exercising because I know that one day, both my wife and I will be able to provide for our children even if we're not as successful as Peepli's families. When I first started studying Bollywood, I knew that there were several kinds of movies: "masala" (sex), "fantasy" (magic), "action" (robbery), "romantic comedy" (love), "thriller" (murder) and many more. There are also aspects, like actors' backgrounds that affect the types of movies they choose. For example, an actor who comes from "kathak" (dance) background will probably be in a dance-based movie, but someone who studied acting in theater is more likely to act in movies that require deep emotions. There are also many genres within Indian languages themselves; one of the most popular is crossover cinema. An example of this is "Hindi Medium" where there was no need for subtitles because it was about an Indian family dealing with everyday life in India (job competition, wealth hoarding). But the most common type of movie is masala. The literal translation of "masala" is "mix", which means that it is a combination of all different aspects." Masala" movies are primarily intended to show how society works on both the micro and macro level. Even though these movies are primarily fictional, they always have a basis of reality. Usually they are about love, loss, revenge or family dynamics. As I studied more about Indian cinema, I came across subgenres of masala movies that have come to be more expected in Indian cinema than others.
